Act 2 Proudly Present an Amateur Production of It Started with a Kiss
by John Godber
A northern college in the late
Seventies provides the setting for the
story of four years in the lives of a
group of students on a drama
teaching course, who learn more
about sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll than
anything they are actually supposed
to be studying.
Dope-smoking Stan, and Rich, the
local boy-made-good, share a room,
and spend their time bickering and
focussing their attentions on the girls
- posh Charlotte, feisty Helen and
religious Tina, the objects of their
affections.
Babs, their highly-strung tutor, does
her best to guide them through the
travails of the course. Teaching
practice with kids from Hell, and low-budget
avant-garde performances of
Julius Caeser may take their toll, but
things really get interesting behind
the scenes with romantic intrigues,
class conflict, and the accidental death
of a geriatric dog.
Even though they are chalk and
cheese, Rich and Charlotte fall for
each other, but it is not long before
there is more than just the two of
them in the relationship. Stan, on
the other hand, is all talk and no
action ...
When the story comes to its bitter-sweet
finale, it is clear to the group
that things are far from having
reached a proper ending. As this
chapter in their lives closes, they must
all look forward in the best direction
possible.
For some, this direction is clearer than
for others.
It Started with a Kiss is written with
all John Godber's usual style and wit
and was originally produced by Hull
Truck Theatre.
